Sadly, I think the rationale for the steady decrease in public payphones is that the cost of their upkeep has far outpaced the revenues that come of their use. Even jacking up the price by 100% to 50 cents was designed to make up for a dramatic shortfall, but it seems that the general public has moved more into cell phone use.
There's not as many as there used to be but I definitely saw some downtown today. There are a pair on Dundas and Richmond and I've seen one by Campus Hi-Fi too. If they work is another thing.
