“It was a spring without voices. On the morning that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of robins, catbirds, doves, jays, wrens, and scores of other bird voices there was now no sound; only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh.” -Rachel Carson
Inspired by the writings of Wendell Berry, Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson, The Fields and the Woods marks the beginning of a longer choreographic process exploring human and environmental ecology, misplaced creatures and social isolation. Clustered vignettes of contemporary dance, movement, story and sound weave images that hang within and travel throughout the gallery.
This work has been generously supported by Practice Loft, a extraordinary new Yoga/Dance Studio in London. Practice Loft opens on January 16th, 2010. www.practiceloft.ca.
About the Artist
Originally from London/Grand Bend Ontario, Sally Morgan works independently and through her company, Eastward Moving, as a dancer, choreographer, improviser, director, filmmaker, teacher and producer. Her choreography has been performed across Canada and in the USA. She began training professionally in Toronto in 1994 and has traveled internationally with studies and work in dance, contact improvisation and film/video.
She continues to explore improvisation and the connections between landscape and the body through her performance, research and teaching. Sally’s current work is focused on dance, place/space and identity. The first version of a group work titled the fields and the woods will be performed February 2010 and a new site-specific multidisciplinary project, commissioned by Neighbourhood Dance Works, will premiere in April 2010 in St. John’s Newfoundland.
